Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) in London, was raised by the mother, her grandmother, and her godparents. Her father was absent from her family. As a child Ford was afflicted with anxiety due to an obsessional-compulsive condition. Ford's passion for acting started as a child. She was a part of at the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted to the Sylvia Young Theatre School. After just a month, she decided that it wasn't suitable for her. Ford then applied to be a student in the Central School of Speech and Drama and was admitted on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall - who later appeared as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was also one of her classmates. Ford earned her bachelor's degree in 1993. However, prior to that, Ford made a television debut when she appeared on Surgical Spirit in an episode that aired in 1990. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in TV shows such including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. Her regular work in theatre has led to her joining the Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. But Tate quickly began gaining recognition for her stand-up comedic performances, which she added to her show in 1996.
